Padma is the Sanskrit word for lotus. It is often referred to as the sacred lotus and plays an important symbolic role in yoga. Padma grows from out of the mud, but blooms in perfect beauty above the surface of the water. Thus, it is often seen as a symbol for those who overcome ignorance and suffering in order to find enlightenment and Self-realization.
Mala is a Sanskrit word meaning garland. Also sometimes called yoga beads, malas are made of many different materials that have different influences and effects on us. Traditionally, they are made with 108, 54, 27, 18 or 9 beads and have been used by yogis and those with spiritual aspirations for thousands of years to keep count of mantra repetitions, known as japa, during meditation. Japa engages the mind spiritually and leads the practitioner to a deep meditative state.
Padmala can be used in the practice of Japa, worn for the beneficial effect or can be worn to simply remind us that we have taken the spiritual path.
